London Premiere – July 3rd, 2025

Greek Cypriot Brotherhood, London

Marking 70 years since the beginning of the EOKA liberation struggle, Letters to Freedom is a powerful theatrical monologue inspired by the final letters of young Cypriot fighters who gave their lives for the dream of freedom.

Directed and conceived by Marios Theocharous, with Athena Savva delivering a hauntingly beautiful solo performance, and scenography and costume design by Thelma Kassoulidou, the production draws on real historical testimony to remind us that even on the threshold of death, these young people wrote not of hatred — but of love, dignity, and life.

A woman – a simple postal worker, becomes the keeper of these letters. With each word, she transforms into Freedom itself — luminous, unbroken, eternal.

Presented by the Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission in the UK in collaboration with the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, and hosted at the historic Greek Cypriot Brotherhood in London, this was an evening of memory, honour, and emotional awakening.

Because remembering is also a form of resistance.

And freedom must always be spoken.
