THE TURBULENT LIFE OF RIRIKA SCHWEITZER

8 July – The Cockpit

What might have been an otherwise eventless July evening was turned into a magical experience for the diverse audience, who decided to attend “The Turbulent Life of Ririka Schweitzer” at The Cockpit Theatre on Monday the 8th. The postmodern musical play, written by Greek musician Efstathia and featuring Cypriot artist Elena Hadjiafxenti, was presented in London by the Cyprus High Commission – Cultural Section and the Open University of Cyprus.

Before the play starts, the High Commissioner of Cyprus, Mr Euripides Evriviades, welcomed the audience as well as the Vice-Rector of the Open University of Cyprus, who took the floor to highlight the university’s cultural activity and strategic plan to an opening to the UK market. Narrating the adventures of aspiring Greek-German singer Ririka Schweitzer in Europe and the US in the inter-war period, the unique performance, which was presented in Greek with surtitles in English, filled the Cockpit auditorium with romance and humour, period sets and costumes, dance numbers, and, of course, loads of music.
