A very successful conference, entitled “COMMONWEALTH TIES: The past, present and future relations between Cyprus, the UK and wider Commonwealth community” took place on Tuesday 10 September at the University of Westminster. The conference was organised by the Cyprus Centre at the University of Westminster and the Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission, in collaboration with the Royal Commonwealth Society, Cyprus Branch and the School of Law, University of Nicosia, with the support of the AG Leventis Foundation.

Professor Andrew Linn, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Westminster welcomed the participants, wishing them a productive day, before giving the floor to the new Cyprus High Commissioner, Mr Andreas S. Kakouris. In his opening remarks, Mr. Kakouris highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Cyprus and the UK, the importance of the Commonwealth for international cooperation in the current political climate, as well as the key role of Cyprus in establishing a partnership mechanism between the organisation and the EU.

The conference provided a great opportunity to bring together scholars and professionals working in different areas related to the wider Commonwealth community, who engaged in an energetic dialogue around a range of topics, including history, politics, education, law, arts and culture, and the environment. The conference was attended by diplomats, representatives from the UK government and the Commonwealth Secretariat, members of Cypriot organisations and associations in the UK, as well as journalists.
