With Alexis Andreou

Sunday 24 April | 1:00pm | Cyprus House, London

As part of the exhibition THERE IS AN ISLAND and within the wider framework of the UK Cyprus Film Festival, we are delighted to present a special workshop led by London-based documentary photographer Alexis Andreou.

Taking place at 1:00pm, just ahead of the festival screenings at 4:00pm, this immersive session creates a meaningful bridge between still and moving image — exploring how narrative is constructed, sequenced, and experienced across visual forms.

About the Workshop

This workshop explores the intersection of documentary photography, narrative construction, text, and the photo book format. Through presentation and discussion, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how photographic sequences and written language interact to create compelling visual stories.

Andreou’s practice focuses on the post-conflict landscape of Cyprus and the impact of displacement on communities shaped by memory and division. Text plays a central role in his work, often drawing from testimonies and lived experience. His projects frequently culminate in carefully constructed photo books — tangible narrative objects that foster intimacy between image and viewer.

The session will examine:

  • The fundamentals of documentary photography and its narrative power

  • Key principles in designing and sequencing photo books

  • Techniques for editing photographs for book form and visual spreads

  • The dynamic interplay between text and image, and how meaning shifts when language enters the frame

The workshop will begin with a presentation before moving into a hands-on group exercise. Participants will work with provided sketchbooks and text excerpts to construct their own visual storytelling sequences. Those who wish are invited to bring their own prints or work-in-progress, though this is not mandatory.

Who Is It For?

This workshop is open to anyone interested in documentary photography and visual storytelling — photographers, filmmakers, visual artists, students, or those simply curious about how images shape cultural memory.

Situated within THERE IS AN ISLAND, a season reflecting on Cyprus through art, memory, and place, and unfolding just hours before the UK Cyprus Film Festival screenings, this workshop invites participants to reflect on how stories of landscape, displacement, identity, and testimony are framed — whether through still image or cinema.

🎟 Tickets are available via Eventbrite.

Places are limited and early booking is recommended.
