It was with great joy that Cyprus House welcomed pupils and teachers from the Ashmolean Greek School, the Greek School of Wales, and St Nicholas’ Greek School, Acton for a special literature and dialogue event celebrating language, identity, and diversity.

The event brought together children of the Greek and Cypriot diaspora for a day of creative exploration, where literature became a space for self-expression and belonging. The enthusiasm and engagement of the participants were evident throughout the day, reflected in their openness, curiosity, and genuine enjoyment.

Poet Anthony Anaxagorou led a creative poetry session that encouraged participants to draw from their lived experiences as second- and third-generation Cypriots, Greeks, and Balkan children born in the UK. Through guided writing and discussion, the children explored how holding their homelands in their hearts shapes who they are, turning personal history into poetic expression.

Writer Paraskevi Salavgia presented a deeply personal, symbolic story centred around mirrors, inviting children to reflect on identity, self-worth, and the beauty of difference. Her storytelling created a safe and imaginative space where diversity was celebrated as a strength and every individual voice was valued.

The event highlighted the importance of language as a bridge to heritage — not only through words, but also through culture, movement, music, and shared experience. Above all, it reaffirmed the importance of nurturing acceptance, empathy, and openness, so that no child feels marginalised or invisible.

We sincerely thank all schools, educators, writers, and families for joining us, and we look forward to welcoming the children of our diaspora to many more cultural moments at Cyprus House.
