As part of the official celebrations marking Cyprus’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union (2026), the Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission in London presents a distinguished symphonic concert in collaboration with the Orchestra of the City.

Under the baton of Chris Hopkins, the concert places contemporary Cypriot creation at the heart of a programme that bridges history, memory, and the great European symphonic tradition.

The evening features two works by contemporary Cypriot composer Giorgos Karvellos:Khirokitia, a symphonic poem inspired by the prehistoric settlement of Choirokoitia — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and Levant: Little Suite for Orchestra, a work reflecting the cultural resonances and musical landscapes of the Eastern Mediterranean.

At the centre of the programme, acclaimed Cypriot violinist Victoria Mavromoustaki performs Mendelssohn’s radiant Violin Concerto, one of the most beloved works of the Romantic repertoire.

The concert concludes with Rachmaninoff’s powerful Symphony No. 1, bringing the evening to a dramatic and emotionally charged close.

This concert forms part of the official cultural programme of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union, celebrating Cyprus’s contemporary artistic voice while reaffirming culture as a space for dialogue, connection, and shared European identity.
