4 – 22 June 2026
Following its recent postponement, the exhibition “George Pol. Georghiou – Timeless Cyprus” returns to London as part of the official cultural programme marking Cyprus’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union (2026).
Presented by the A. G. Leventis Gallery, in collaboration with the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in the United Kingdom, and with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, the exhibition is hosted at the The Hellenic Centre.
This marks the first international presentation of the exhibition following its inaugural showing at the A. G. Leventis Gallery in Nicosia in 2022.
About the Exhibition
Through his work, George Polyviou Georghiou (1901–1972) emerges as one of the most significant figures in the visual narration of Cyprus’s modern history.
His paintings, created primarily during the 1940s and 1950s, form a powerful and deeply personal portrait of the island. Through scenes of everyday life, religious imagery, symbolic compositions and landscapes, Georghiou captures the essence of Cyprus—its people, its traditions, its anxieties and its enduring spirit.
A particularly important aspect of the exhibition is the presentation of works that remained for over forty years in the artist’s hometown of Famagusta. Their return and display today represent a meaningful moment in the ongoing effort to preserve and share Cyprus’s cultural heritage.
Georghiou’s work exists at the intersection of Cypriot experience and European artistic tradition, drawing on influences that range from religious iconography to modern European painting. His compositions bring together figures, spaces and symbols into a rich visual language through which memory, identity and history are explored.

A Living Cultural Moment
“Timeless Cyprus” is more than an exhibition. It is a reflection on how art carries memory across time and place.
Through the work of George Pol. Georghiou, Cyprus is revealed not only as a geographical space, but as a lived experience—one shaped by history, displacement, resilience and continuity.
This exhibition brings that story to London, inviting audiences to encounter Cyprus through the eyes of an artist who dedicated his life to capturing its essence.
