The Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission in London, in partnership with the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, is proud to present The Island, an acclaimed new production by ETHAL (Limassol Theatre Development Company) in collaboration with Point To Contemporary Theater.
Created to coincide with Cyprus's Presidency of the Council of the European Union, The Island is an original theatrical work inspired by Athol Fugard's celebrated play of the same name. Based on extensive research, real testimonies and historical narratives from the period of British colonial rule in Cyprus, the production explores the island's history, collective memory and cultural identity through the power of theatre.
Rather than presenting a history lesson, the play creates a theatrical space where audiences encounter two opposing voices and witness the possibility of understanding, acceptance and coexistence.
Set in colonial Cyprus between 1955 and 1959, the story follows two prisoners sharing the same cell: Andreas, a Greek Cypriot EOKA fighter, and Ibrahim, a Turkish Cypriot teacher accused of an armed attack on a police officer. Coming from different communities, beliefs and life experiences, the two men are brought together by imprisonment, isolation and violence. As their relationship evolves, the audience is invited to reflect on memory, identity, communication and the shared human experience beyond division.
One of the production's most distinctive artistic elements is its multilingual approach. Greek, Turkish and English are woven naturally into the performance, allowing language itself to become part of the dramatic experience and highlighting both the challenges and the possibilities of communication.
The Cypriot Community Centre provides a particularly meaningful setting for this production. As one of the most important gathering places for the Cypriot community in the United Kingdom, it offers an ideal space for a performance that encourages dialogue and reflection on the island's shared history and the continuing importance of mutual understanding within the diaspora.
Following the performance, guests are invited to join the artists and organisers for a wine reception.
